Africa Rail Awards - Rewarding excellence even in tough times

By Shanna | June 3, 2010

Terrapinn South Africa once again hosted another successful awards evening. The 4th annual Africa Rail Awards was held at The Hilton in Sandton. Attendees braved the cold Johannesburg winter weather and turned up in full gala dinner glamour.

Winners of the various categories were as follows:

Best Rail operator in Africa – Transnet Freight Rail
Best service provider – Transnet Rail Engineering
Best technology provider – GE Transportation
Organisation that has successfully contributed to skills development – Transnet Rail Engineering
Lifetime achievement award – Mervyn Panzera, Railway Safety Regulator
Personality of the year – Nkulueko Poya, Kei Rail
Best passenger rail operator – East London Umtata Railway Project (Kei Rail Project)

Richard Vallihu, General Manager of Transnet Rail Engineering dubbed the Africa Rail Awards the Oscars for the rail industry, and stated he was honored to receive the awards, and acknowledged the tough time the industry and especially Transnet have been facing over the past year. He accepted the awards on behalf of 13000 thousand Transnet Rail Engineering employees, some of which were currently hard at work in the pits under locomotives ensuring the trains were ready for the tracks.

With more projects and developments on the cards Africa’s rail industry is set for big things as Africa rises to meet the challenges both here and abroad. The Africa Rail Awards looks forward to rewarding more innovators in the years to come.
