Africa investor and the World Bank to host Investment Climate Summit in Washington

By Shanna | March 11, 2010

Washington, Johannesburg; 11 March 2010: Africa investor (Ai), a leading international investment research and communications group, today announced that its Investment Climate Summit will be held in association with the World Bank Group and will take place on October 8 2010, on the eve of the World Bank Annual Meeting in Washington.

The Africa investor Investment Climate Summit is a consultative business forum designed to facilitate action, to highlight and address project-specific investment climate challenges and shed light on Africa’s investment success stories.

This year’s Summit will highlight and address Africa’s investment climate developments and will bring together private investors with significant investment projects, Ministers of Finance from across Africa and development finance leaders, to discuss new investment initiatives and public-private partnerships to stimulate investment flows. Through facilitated discussions, the Summit will look at sector-specific and regional investment projects that can support Africa in job creation, regional economic integration and enhance Africa’s competitiveness as a global investment destination.

With the support of the World Bank Group and other development agencies, many African governments have instituted policies to improve the investment climate in favour of attracting both domestic and long-term foreign direct investment and creating a more conducive environment for entrepreneurs to operate in. These initiatives are transforming Africa’s business environment, with African countries representing some of the most progressive reformers in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report for 2010. However, in today’s increasingly competitive and complex investment information environment, African investment climate reforms need to be strategically communicated if they are to increase Africa’s share of global investment flows, which currently stands at around a mere 2%.

Commenting on the Summit, Hubert Danso, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Africa investor, said; “We are delighted to be collaborating again with the World Bank Group on such an important event. Through the Bank’s engagements with governments and Africa investor’s vast network of investors, the Summit will play an important role in facilitating partnerships to engage investors and accelerate the growth of enterprise and job creation in Africa.”

Taking place on the eve of the World Bank Annual Meeting in Washington, the Summit will engage business leaders on the recommendations emanating from the World Bank’s work on investment climate assessments as well as support to Presidential Investment Advisory Councils in several sub-Saharan Africa countries and other forms of public-private sector dialogue. It will also provide an unparalleled opportunity to partner the private sector and raise awareness around the importance of effectively improving Africa’s investment climate.
