Ghanaian Tourism Minister in the running for prestigious Africa investor Tourism Award

Ghana, South Africa, 5 February 2010: Africa investor (Ai), a leading international investment research and communications group, today announced that Mrs Juliana Azumah-Mensah, Ghana’s tourism minister, will join six other Africa ministers on the shortlist which could see the Honourable Mrs Azumah-Mensah win the coveted Africa investor (Ai) African Tourism Minister of the Year Award.

The winner’s name is contained in a shortlist and will be announced by Africa investor, a leading international investment research and communications group, at its annual Tourism Investment Summit Awards ceremony.

Other Ministers shortlisted in the African Tourism Minister of the Year Award category include:
• HE Catherine Namugala, Minister of Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources, Zambia
• Hon. Hindolo Sunanguru Tyre, Minister of Tourism, Sierra Leone
• Hon. Eng W Mzembi, Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Republic of Zimbabwe
• Hon. N. Nandi-Ndaitwah, Minister of Environment and Tourism, Namibia
• Hon. Shamsa Mwangunga, Minister, Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Tanzania
• Hon. Kahinda Otafiire, Minister of Tourism, Trade and Industry, Uganda

Commenting on the Awards, Prof Geoffrey Lipman, Special Advisor to the Under Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). “These awards are Africa’s only initiative designed to recognise the achievements of those businesses, governments, organisations and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the growth of sustainable tourism investment in Africa.”

The Awards will be presented at a gala ceremony on February 16 at the Rainbow Towers Hotel and Convention Centre, in Harare, Zimbabwe. It will coincide with the Africa Investor Tourism Investment Summit 2010 the 15-17 February at the same venue.

Commenting on the shortlist, the Vice Chairman of African investor, Hubert Danso, said that sub-Saharan African travel and tourism capital investments was estimated at US $20.4 billion in 2008 and by 2018 should reach US $42.6bn. “As in any region, travel and tourism acts as a catalyst for construction and manufacturing and these Awards will recognise those organisations pioneering such projects,” said Mr Danso.

The highly competitive Tourism investment Awards received entries from leading African groups in the following categories:

• Tourism Promotion Agency (TPA) of the Year
• Hospitality Management Team of the Year
• Sustainable Tourism Investment of the Year
• Best Initiative Facilitating SME Tourism Investment
• Hotel Investment of the Year
• Tourism Investment Advisor of the Year
• Business Airline of the Year
• TI 2010 – Legacy Investment of the Year
• Tourism investor City of the Year
