Africa investor Tourism Investment Awards 2010 Shortlist Announced

By Shanna | February 3, 2010

Africa investor (Ai), a leading international investment research and communications group, today announced the shortlist for the prestigious 2010 Africa investor Tourism Investment Awards, to be held on the evening of 16 February 2010 in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The Ai Tourism Investment Awards were created to showcase Africa’s opportunities and achievements in the tourism sector to the global investment community. They are designed to collectively raise awareness about Africa as a tourism investment destination and reward groups developing the African tourism industry as a vehicle to drive sustainable economic growth.

“These Awards are the only initiative designed to recognise the achievement of those businesses, governments, organisations and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the growth of sustainable tourism investment in Africa,” said Professor Geoffrey Lipman, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organisation and member of the judging panel.
The Ai Tourism Investment Awards ceremony coincides with the Africa investor Pan African Tourism Investment Summit, being held in association with the Government of Zimbabwe and hosted with the support of the World Tourism Organisation.

The Summit, which will take place on the 15-17 February 2010 at the Rainbow Towers Hotel and Convention Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, is regarded as the international calendar tourism investment event for Africa. The Summit brings together mayors, tourism and infrastructure project promoters, with private and institutional investors with interests in Africa. Africa investor will also facilitate pre-arranged one-on-one meetings between investors and project promoters during the Summit.

Commenting on the Awards, Hubert Danso, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Africa investor said: “Global research compiled by Accenture shows sub-Saharan Africa’s travel and tourism economy is ranked 11th in absolute size worldwide, and 6th in long-term (ten-year) growth. As in any region, travel and tourism acts as a catalyst for job creation, infrastructure development, construction and manufacturing, and our Awards will recognise those organisations pioneering such projects, and the Summit will connect viable projects with serious investors.”

Dr Bamanga Tukur, Chairman, NEPAD Business Group; Trevor Ward, Managing Director, W Hospitality Group; Geoffrey Lipman, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General, United Nations World Tourism Organisation; Irene Visser, Tourism Programme Manager, International Financial Corporation; Hubert Danso, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Africa investor and Kate Rivett-Carnac, Tourism Specialist, Development Bank of Southern Africa.
