Africa’s business leaders recognised by Africa investor during World Bank annual meetings in Washington

Johannesburg, Washington DC, 23 September 2011: Africa investor (Ai), a leading international investment research and communications group, today announced the winners of the Africa investor Investment and Business Leader Awards 2011, which took place at an invitation-only ceremony during the World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington DC.

These prestigious Awards are the longest-standing international awards to reward exceptional business practices, economic achievements and investments across Africa, and they recognise the institutions and individuals improving the continent’s investment climate.

Officially opening the awards, Bisi Onasanya, CEO of First Bank Nigeria, commented: “I’d like to congratulate the nominees as leaders in their fields. It is through your efforts that Africa is beginning to be recognised as a viable investment destination. A further congratulations must go to the winners for their truly outstanding achievements. Let us continue to improve on all levels and further develop the continent’s investment climate.”

This year’s winners included a number of high-profile personalities, who were recognised for the outstanding work they are doing in their respective fields. They included Amadou Diallo, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding, for Africa’s Innovation Leader of the Year, and Africa’s Leading Woman in Business went to Philisiwe Buthelezi, CEO of South Africa’s National Empowerment Fund. International Business Leader of the Year went to Vikram Pandit, CEO of Citibank, while Up and Coming Future Leader of the Year was awarded to Kola Karim, CEO, Shoreline Energy. Finance Minister of the Year Honourable was presented to Dr Kwabena Duffuor, Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, Republic of Ghana.

Institutions recognised included; African Development Bank for the Carbon Finance Initiative of the Year Award, Helios Investment Partners for Venture Capital Deal of the Year. Ecobank won Bank of the Year and South Africa’s Public Investment Corporation won Institutional Investor of the Year (the full winners list is attached). Equity Bank took the Best Initiative in Support of SMEs and the MDGs, and Chayton Capital, Investment Climate Initiative of the Year.

The Awards luncheon was sponsored by First Bank Nigeria.

8. Investment Promotion Agency of the Year - The Board of Investment Mauritius
9. Leadership in Sustainable Investment in Africa - Africa Finance Corporation
10. Africa’s Innovation Leader of the Year - Amadou Diallo CEO, DHL Global Forwarding
11. Africa’s Leading Woman in Business - Philisiwe Buthelezi, CEO, National Empowerment Fund
12. African Business Leader of the Year - Jubril Adewale Tinubu, CEO, Oando Plc, Nigeria
13. International Business Leader of the Year - Vikram Pandit, CEO, Citibank
14. Up and Coming Future Leader of the Year – Kola Karim, CEO, Shoreline Energy
15. Finance Minister of the Year Honourable - Dr Kwabena Duffuor, Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, Republic of Ghana
