By Staff Reporter | September 24, 2011

Johannesburg, South Africa; Washington DC, US, 24 September 2011: Africa investor (Ai), a leading international investment research and communications group, today announced that the Ai Africa Investment Climate Summit, held in association with the World Bank Group, concluded successfully in Washington, with a renewed determination to implement regional economic integration projects to increase the continent’s competitiveness as a global investment destination.

The Summit convened over 200 African business leaders, Ministers of Finance, Central Bank Governors, international investors and development finance institutions to assess factors directing sectoral growth on the continent. The Summit was opened by Hubert Danso, Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman Africa investor, Obiageli Ezekwesili, Regional Vice President, Africa Region, World Bank, and Thierry Tanoh, Vice President, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Caribbean, and Western Europe for the International Finance Corporation.

The invitation-only Summit brought together over 250 business and government leaders to focus on Africa’s investment opportunities and business climate reform options. A highlight of the event was provided by Sir Bob Geldof, Africa Progress Panel member and founder of the 8 Mile Fund, who eloquently described why his strong and considered message to global influencers is investment rather than aid for Africa, and why it is not only good for Africa but the West, which has no option if it is seeking growth. The Summit also hosted the annual Ai Investment and Business Leader Awards ceremony.

Summit partners included: The World Bank Group; The International Finance Corporation, The World Bank Institute, The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, African Export Import Bank, GE Africa, Harith, MasterCard, Equity Bank, World Trade Center Africa Initiative, First Bank, Thomson Reuters, The Carlyle Group, EMPEA, Bunengi Group, Pan-African Employers’ Confederation, Private Investors for Africa, Initiative for Global Development, Business Call to Action, Trade Invest Africa, Afrique Expansion and the Association of African Central Banks.
